  • YOUR TAX-DEDUCTIBLE DONATION PROVIDES RESOURCES AND SERVICES FOR ADULT LEARNERS/STUDENT VETERANS THAT HELP PREVENT DROPOUT/BURNOUT FROM SCHOOL, WORK, AND LIFE BY CHANGING THE PERCEPTION OF DISABLED TO DIFFERENTLY-ABLED!
      • WHY WE DO HELP "NONTRADITIONAL" ADULT LEARNERS/STUDENT VETERANS?
        • Many Nontraditional Adult Students dropout due to emotional challenges and incur overwhelming financial debt from student loans https://nces.ed.gov …tens of thousands of Iraq and Afghanistan War veterans are enrolled in colleges and universities across the country, courtesy of the GI Bill. Over 25% of college students are parents (http:/students.collegefactual.com/blog/are-colleges-supporting-non-traditional-students). Almost all of them — 88 percent — will drop out by next summer, feeling isolated and frustrated in an alien culture. (www.huffingtonpost.com/2012/10/25/). Nearly half of college students who are U.S. military veterans have thought of suicide and 20 percent said they had planned to kill themselves—rates significantly higher than those of college students in general, according to a study presented by M. David Rudd, PhD, during APA's 2011 Annual Convention. A "traditional" student is commonly: * 18-20 years old, single, * enrolled in higher education (college or vocational training) within a year after high school, * has minimal or no emotional, learning, mental or physical challenges that limit functioning, * involved with a social network on and off campus * comes from a family of college graduates.
            • WHY WE DO WHAT WE DO? The "nontraditional" student serviced by White Apple Institute is usually: * 25 -50 years old, married or with significant partner, or a working parent * Enrolled in college or attempted coursework five or more years after high school and may have overwhelming financial debt from student loans. * Experiencing psychological and social stressors that disable him/her emotionally in school, work and life. (i.e. overwhelming class and work schedules, parenting, discrimination, violence, cultural, LGBTQ, Foreign Language Anxiety, chronic pain management, PTSD/MST issues, relationship responsibilities, mental health…and more) * Struggling to manage academic coursework and work demands due to mental, learning and "invisible" disability and/or psychological trauma that affects performance and may result be "at risk" of burnout or loss of jobs, dropout from classes, depression, hopelessness, homelessness and suicidal thoughts * Experiencing embarrassment when discussing the perception of "disability/disabled", asking for accommodations at school and work, accessing resources in underserved communities. Non Traditional STUDENT VETERANS experience all the above, in addition to; psychological transitions into civilian cultures at school, work, and a quality of life.
